Trong 10 năm qua, khoa học và công nghệ (KH&CN) thế giới đã có những xu hướng đổi mới như đề cao nghiên cứu cơ bản, nhấn mạnh tới khoa học xã hội và nhân văn, phát triển công nghệ cao, KH&CN góp phần rõ rệt vào phát triển kinh tế, tăng cường hoạt động KH&CN của doanh nghiệp, KH&CN hướng vào nhiều mặt phục vụ xã hội và con người, quốc tế hóa hoạt động KH&CN,... Đó cũng sẽ là những xu hướng chính của KH&CN trong 10 năm. Đồng thời, cũng sẽ có sự thay đổi theo hướng cụ thể hơn và mở rộng hơn định hướng từng được hình thành từ trước.
