IoT không còn là một dự đoán, một xu thế mà là một cuộc cách mạng phát triển và ứng dụng công nghệ mới đang diễn ra như vũ bão trên toàn thế giới, trong vòng 5-10 năm tới sẽ phát triển ổn định, mang lại hiệu quả cao. IoT có tiềm năng để thay đổi thế giới dựa trên nền tảng Internet, cho phép thông tin được chia sẻ và quyết định thực hiện mà không cần sự can thiệp nhiều của con người. IoT đã cho phép tiết kiệm rất lớn về nguồn lực vật chất, thời gian và nguồnnhân lực. IoT được ứng dụng trong nhiều lĩnh vực và mang lại nhiều tác động tích cực như tăng hiệu quả hoạt động của các lĩnh vực. Tuy nhiên, IoT cũng có những tác động tiêu cực về mất an toàn an ninh thông tin, tiêu tốn nguồn năng lượng để duy trì các hệ thống của IoT, làm phát sinh hệ thống rác thải điện tử mới trong quá trình thay thế hệ thống cũ.
